Since 1 December 2011 Andreas Werz (46) has been providing reinforcement to the corporate communications team at upc cablecom. He joined the largest cable network operator in Switzerland from the energy company Alpiq. From 2009 he was head of media and external communication at Alpiq. Before that he worked for just under ten years in internal and external communications at the world football association FIFA. So Andreas Werz and Marc Maurer now make up the team of media spokesmen at upc cablecom.

Thanks to a new menu navigation upc cablecom's Video on Demand (VOD) service is now faster, as well as easier to use and manage. With this new development Switzerland's biggest cable network operator has laid the basis for a further extension of its VOD offering, currently comprising over 1,000 films, opening up an entirely new dimension in home cinema entertainment for its over 1.5 million customers. The number of high definition (HD) TV channels (twenty are currently available) will also be expanded in the coming months.

upc cablecom continued to record accelerated growth in the third quarter of 2011. The largest cable network operator in Switzerland achieved a substantial increase in customer figures totalling 45,600 digital subscribers. The revenue of CHF 283.6 million (+4 million compared to the corresponding quarter last year) is the seventh positive quarterly development in succession. In addition to the TV segment, a significant driver of the growth in subscriptions was in voice and broadband, both of which rose by more than 10,000 additional connections in the quarter under review.

upc cablecom is having the verdict which was passed on 23 August 2011 by the Swiss Federal Administrative Court regarding the obligation to broadcast in the analogue service for the youth channel Joiz reviewed by the Federal Court. Joiz has already been broadcast in the free digital service of upc cablecom since last March and can be received virtually everywhere in German-speaking Switzerland via various broadcasting channels.

In the latest published Telekom Rating from Swiss business magazine “BILANZ”, upc cablecom has for the fifth time taken first place in the “Corporate Network Carrier” category. In addition, the largest cable network company in Switzerland made a giant leap to fourth place overall in the “Fixed Telephony” category. The rating is conducted annually and is based on a representative survey of business customers of the major Swiss telecommunications companies.

In its communiqué of 5 September 2011, the Competition Commission (WEKO) confirms that the cooperation projects between Swisscom and public utility providers submitted to it for preliminary examination regarding the extension of the optical fibre network may pose a major threat to competition. upc cablecom thus regards its opinion as confirmed and is demanding that market players now address the misgivings voiced by WEKO.

Smart metering, the real-time recording of data on electricity consumption and the transmission of this data should help to encourage consumers of electricity to be more economical in their energy consumption. A pilot project which upc cablecom realised together with Elektrizitätsversorgung Altendorf AG has now demonstrated that smart metering also works perfectly through the cable network. Compared to other solutions that are in use at the moment, hybrid fibre coax networks (HFC networks) are even coming out on top.

Switzerland’s largest cable network operator upc cablecom improved both its subscriber figures and revenues for the second quarter of 2011. Following rebranding in the first quarter, upc cablecom reported for the first time more than half a million Digital TV customers and increased revenue by 2.4% to CHF 284 million in comparison to the corresponding period in the previous year. The total number of subscribers for Digital TV, Internet and telephony services increased by 26,600. The total number of viewers who enjoy their TV programmes over the upc cablecom network in Switzerland remained stable at 1.5 million for the quarter.

Switzerland’s largest cable network operator is appointing Alexander M. Lorenz as new Vice President Network Services as per June 2011. Lorenz joins upc cablecom from Kabel Deutschland where he was responsible for the operation, fault clearance and provisioning of Germany’s largest cable network. Alfred Seiler, current Vice President Network Services, is to take up the newly created position as Vice President Technology at upc cablecom. The sales organisation will also see a management change. As of 1 July 2011 Eva Slack will be Vice President Sales at upc cablecom. Ms Slack has worked within the Liberty Global group since 2000, her current position being the Vice President Sales at UPC Netherlands. The current Vice President Sales, Raymond Loehr is returning to the Netherlands where he will take up a new post as Vice President Customer Experience at the group’s European headquarters in Amsterdam.

Switzerland’s largest cable network carrier started the year successfully with the highest revenue growth in two years. With CHF 282m in the first quarter, last year's revenue was topped by 2.5%. This increase was driven by continued strong customer growth in digital products. With 45,000 new digital connections in the first three months, including more than 30,000 in digital television alone, upc cablecom affirmed its stable upward trend.

For Switzerland’s largest cable network operator it marks an extension of its geographical network coverage. Nothing will change for the communities and customers involved as both the St. Gallen community antenna and Uri TV cooperative cable network operators are long-standing partners of upc cablecom. upc cablecom recently celebrated the launch of the new brand with even faster Internet speeds for new customers. Soon more than 400 000 existing customers will also be enjoying Internet speeds that are up to five times faster than before. Customers will receive the higher speeds on the same or even slightly cheaper terms. Following upc cablecom’s mid-March launch of paperless bills for new customers, the company is now introducing electronic billing for existing customers as well. Billing will continue to be free of charge for customers provided they opt for the paperless bill.

The new cablecom iPhone app «Bill2Mobile» offers a direct overview of the bill at the push of one button. Switching to paperless invoices brings customers a string of benefits. It is easier to make payments and reduces the carbon footprint at the same time. By using paperless invoices cablecom can potentially save an approx. 2.6 kilometre stack of A4 paper.

In the fourth quarter of 2010, Switzerland’s largest cable network operator was able to add 57,400 subscriptions for digital products, more than double of the growth in the prior quarter. For the year, cablecom generated 140,400 additional subscriptions for digital products, of which two third were related to TV. In 2010 overall, the company’s turnover increased by 1.3% to CHF 1.12 billion. This year, cablecom is once again investing heavily in its network infrastructure. The Fiber Power rollout for top Internet speeds will be completed by the end of March 2011. cablecom will change its company name, as announced, to upc cablecom from the second quarter of 2011.

In the technological El Dorado of Zurich West, Switzerland’s largest cable network operator has furnished sensational proof of cable’s future viability. In a record-beating attempt, cablecom has achieved a hitherto unprecedented Internet speed of 1.37 Gigabits per second – over a conventional coaxial television cable. Thanks to new, innovative software, the power consumption in stand-by mode of set-top boxes with recording functions has now been reduced to less than 1 watt. cablecom continued its growth trend in the third quarter of 2010 and increased its number of customers for all digital products. For Internet services, Switzerland’s largest cable network operator crossed the threshold of 500,000 customers at the end of September. In digital television, the market leader gained a further 17,000 subscribers from July to September, reaching a total of more than 430,000 customers at the end of the third quarter. Compared to the same quarter the previous year, the company’s overall turnover increased by CHF 5 million to CHF 280 million.

At the end of June 2010 cablecom business signed a contract for the construction and operation of a high-speed network with the RODIAG Group, which specializes in radio diagnostics. This network is designed to link the RODIAG sites in the north and east of Switzerland. From this autumn it will be possible for data to be exchanged in the new optical fibre corporate network at rates of up to 1,000 Mbit/s.

Converting the television production to HD will increase the current transmission capacities eightfold. From 1 April 2010 surfing the Internet will be even faster and more cost effective for cablecom customers. In Fiber Power internet 20, cablecom is launching a product which is based on its next-generation cable network. At monthly charges of CHF 50, it is almost four times faster than products with a comparable price from the competition. At the same time, cablecom will be embarking on changing its brand identity – as already announced – with the introduction of the UPC logo.

From June 2010, cablecom upgrades the cable connection of 1.5 million Swiss households and introduces a new basic digital TV offer with 55 channels including HD suisse. Cable TV customers can get access to this new of-fer via a fully interactive HD set-top box and additional features for only CHF 4 per month, or via the DigiCard for CHF 99 and without extra monthly costs. The cablecom cable connection also comes with new free Internet connection and transmission speed of 300 Kbit/s. The upgrade of the unchanged ba-sic analogue package and the additional options are linked with an increase in the service charge for the cable connection of CHF 0.70 to a total of CHF 23.20, in agreement with the price regulator.

After Liberty Global Europe’s posting of the annual results for 2009, cablecom reports an increase in annual sales of CHF 7 million to CHF 1,105 million. In the strategically important segment of digital television, cablecom recorded around 400,000 customers by mid February 2010. Compared with the end of 2009 (379,000 customers), the company has seen accelerating growth over the past few weeks.

Winter Olympics in HD – cablecom makes it possible

Right on time for the start of the Winter Olympics on 12 February 2010 in Van-couver, cablecom is launching the HD version of the two public service stations ARD and ZDF in its basic digital TV package - at no extra charge. The two German channels will be activated in high-definition quality on 2 February.

At the beginning of November, the Federal Office of Communication (BAKOM), told cablecom that public service broadcaster World Radio Switzerland (WRS) would have to be aired on the analogue cable network. WRS is the English language radio station for Switzerland’s international audience. It is operated by the SRG SSR idée suisse in cooperation with the BBC. From 2 December 2009, cablecom will now be transmitting WRS instead of BBC World Radio on the analogue cable network throughout the whole of Switzerland.

In cooperation with Swiss Television, cablecom is launching TV on demand as of immediate effect. As a result, cablecom customers in the greater Zurich area can now catch up on all programmes produced by Swiss Television at any time for up to a week after their initial broadcast. This is part of cablecom’s digital basic offer and comes at no extra cost. By the end of 2010, this service will be available countrywide.

From 1 December 2009, Koen Verwee will take over as the Marketing and Product Management Vice President at cablecom. Over the past few years, the 40-year-old Belgian has been Vice President of Market Development at Telenet, the largest provider of broadband cable services in Belgium and one of the leading cable operators in Europe. There are also further changes in the communications and sales departments: Hans-Peter Nehmer, Director of Corporate Communications, will leave the company at the end of 2009. His responsibilities will be taken on by Franco Gullotti, previous Head of Media Relations at Swiss. Raymond Löhr, former Sales Director Europe at UPC Corporate and interim Sales Director at cablecom since July 2009, will take on this role permanently with immediate effect.

Cablecom kick starts the next Internet speed level: Fiber Power internet brings the next generation of fast Internet provision, with download speeds of up to 100 Mbit/s and increased upload volumes. Cablecom customers can now surf the net up to five times faster than with the quickest DSL providers. Cablecom’s new Internet access is available immediately in the Zurich, Bern and Winterthur areas and will be extended across Switzerland by the end of 2010.

Concluding significant network modernisation throughout Switzerland in the past years, one million cablecom households are now upgraded to the highest level of capacity and performance. The upgrade program will allow the widespread introduction of new interactive services planned in late autumn – such as Video and TV on demand – and ultra fast Fiber Power internet products with speeds of over 100 Megabits per second.

At the end of February, the Federal Office of Communication (OFCOM) approved the Swiss sports television channel (SSF) application to be broadcast in cablecom’s analogue cable network. The decision was justified by the fact that, as a broad-based sports channel, SSF complements the sports products of other TV operators and, in particular, of the Swiss Broadcasting Corporation (SRG). Cablecom accepts OFCOM’s media policy decision and will broadcast SSF from 1 July 2009 on the analogue cable network in german-speaking Switzerland instead of the German sports channel DSF/HSE 24.

From 17 March, cablecom will extend its digital TV channel selection. 16 new channels will be added to the basic digital service – nine of which are in English. As a result, cablecom now offers Switzerland’s most comprehensive TV package in English.

In 2008, cablecom achieved a respectable result under difficult conditions. In comparison with the previous year, turnover increased by 4.8 percent to CHF 1.098 billion. All advanced digital services showed a growing customer base. Digital television continued to grow the most quickly.

Cablecom is now launching two new Internet packages: hispeed 2000 for 34 Swiss francs and hispeed 10000 for 49 Swiss francs. The upload speeds are 200 and 1,000 kilobits respectively per second (kbps.) The new subscriptions mean a significant increase in the bandwidth for average Internet packages. Previous subscribers can switch to the new products immediately if they wish.
